The Background:

my work – the great Indian wedding design : According to Hindu religious texts, Brahma created man from the right shoulder and woman from his left shoulder. They become an integral part of each other after the marriage ceremony. Indian weddings are a mainstay in the social calendar of the whole community. The preparation for an Indian wedding is a typically lavish affair.

But, increasingly, young modern Indian couples are starting to incorporate western features into their weddings, such as speeches, the first dance as well as the wedding cake. But the biggest change has been the inclusion of Wedding Planners, that has become a staple fixture in the rich and famous and the not-so-rich Indian weddings these days. The big day’s date is the only thing that needs to be decided by the family and the rest becomes a responsibility of the wedding planners. They have become an essential ingredient in the Indian wedding masala that adds to the glamour quotient.

Theme based weddings like royal, historic, romantic are a big craze nowadays. The wedding planner’s team takes care of decoration, catering, ticket booking, buying the trousseau, jewelry and other essentials.

The Project:

I got a chance to be a tiny little part of this whole scene…well, I just designed the business card of a wedding planner…okay, a very little part but apart I was :).

The Business card had a very simple brief. Design something that has the Indian wedding theme all over it. So, it had to be something that was common in all modern Indian weddings…something that says Shaadi without saying a word! For my work – the great Indian wedding design, I chose Henna or Mehndi. It is a ceremonial art form, which originated in ancient India. Muslims also use it as an upcoming of age. Intricate patterns of mehndi are typically applied to brides before wedding ceremonies. 

The occasion of the Mehndi ceremony is often one of the most important pre-wedding rituals. So, mehndi it was! A beautiful and elaborate pattern, slightly recreated to suit the form of a business card, became the background for my work – the great Indian wedding design.
